The claim that COVID-19 leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, once dismissed as a wild conspiracy theory, is gaining traction. FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday confirmed the agency’s assessment that the virus “most likely” originated in a “Chinese government-controlled lab.” This marks the first public confirmation of the FBI’s classified judgement on the source of the pandemic.

Days before Wray’s statement, the US Energy Department identified a lab leak as the most likely source of the disease, albeit with a low level of confidence. In response, Beijing accused Washington of “political manipulation,” adding that the COVID-19 may have jumped to humans from frozen food shipped from elsewhere in the world.

Theories of the lab leak have been circulating since the earliest days of the pandemic. The Wuhan Institute of Virology, where research into coronaviruses has been conducted for years, is located near the market from which the first cases were linked. Former President Donald Trump began promoting the theory in April 2020, leading to a fierce partisan debate in the US, with some dismissing it as a conspiracy. Trump’s use of the xenophobic term “China virus” to describe the disease further stoked the controversy.

Anthony Fauci, the US government’s top expert on infectious diseases, initially believed the virus had originated in nature. However, he has since expressed doubt that the source of the virus will ever be known.

The lab leak theory has gained momentum in recent months, with calls for further investigation into the origins of the pandemic. However, it is unlikely that we will ever know the truth. The Chinese government has denied any wrongdoing, and investigating the origins of the virus requires access to sensitive information and facilities, which China has been reluctant to provide. The debate over the origins of COVID-19 will likely continue, but the truth may remain elusive.
